Postdoc Fellowships - Independent Research Groups: Call for Participation
Goals of the program
The Max Planck Center for Visual Computing and Communication conducts fundamental and applied research in Visual
Computing and Communication, one of key areas of modern Information Technology, involving an outstanding group
of faculty members at Stanford's Computer Science and Electrical Engineering Departments, at the Max Planck
Institute for Computer Science, and at Saarland University.
The Max Planck Center also addresses the particular career development needs of young German scientists in
Information Technology. It will foster the professional development of a small number of selected,
outstanding individuals by providing them with the opportunity to work at Stanford University as Visiting
Assistant Professors in the area of Visual Computing and Communication for up to two years
(Phase I)
and then return to Germany to continue their research as a senior researcher (E14/E15 TVöD) at
the Max Planck Institute for Computer Science
(Phase II) leading a small research group
of his/her own for an additional period of three years.
The collaboration between the Max Planck Institute for Computer Science and Stanford University has two intertwined
goals:
- Establish a joint research program in the key information technology area of "Visual Computing and
Communication"
- Incorporate a strong career development component to alleviate the shortage of qualified faculty
and scientists in information technology in Germany
To achieve these goals, Stanford University and the Max Planck Society have set up the Max Planck Center for Visual
Computing and Communication, with corresponding research activities at the Max Planck Institute for Computer Science
and at Stanford University.
Research Program
The Max Planck Center will carry out a coherent, but highly dynamic research program in the area of "Visual
Computing and Communication" jointly between Stanford University and the Max Planck Institute for Computer
Science in Germany, addressing sub-areas such as: Image communication, computer graphics, geometric computing,
imaging systems, computer vision, human machine interface, distributed multimedia architectures, multimedia networking,
visual media security etc.
Guide for Applicants
Applicants for
Phase I of the program must have completed an outstanding PhD. Upon successful
completion of
Phase I they will be eligible for
Phase II of the program as senior
researcher and leader of their own research group at the Max Planck Institute for Computer Science.
Direct applicants for
Phase II must have completed a postdoc stay abroad and must have demonstrated
their outstanding research potential and ability to successfully lead their own research group.
The Max Planck Center is an equal opportunity employer and women are encouraged to apply.
